Most everyday home-working tasks do not need the fastest broadband package. What matters is having enough download and upload capacity for everyone using the connection, alongside stable Wi-Fi where you work.
One person using email, cloud documents and video calls will usually need much less capacity than a household with several people working, studying, streaming and gaming at once.
Email and ordinary web browsing use relatively little data. More demanding activities include:
Check the current recommendations from the specific services your employer uses. Requirements can change and different video settings use different amounts of data.
You need both. Download speed helps you receive files, load cloud services and see other people on calls. Upload speed carries your camera and voice to everyone else and affects how quickly you send files.
If calls freeze mainly when your camera is on or large files take a long time to send, upload performance may be part of the problem.
A work VPN can reduce the speed measured on the device because traffic is encrypted and routed through your employer’s systems. Its performance can also depend on the VPN server and company network.
For a useful comparison, run a speed test without the VPN, then reconnect and test again if your employer permits it. Do not bypass your employer’s security rules to improve a test result.
Work as close to the main router or mesh unit as practical, keep equipment in the open and use Ethernet for a fixed desk if you can. If you use an extra eero, position it between the main eero and the problem area, not inside the dead spot.
If the connection is good at the router but poor at your desk, a faster package may not fix it. Follow our wifi coverage guide first.
Ask:
Choose enough capacity for the whole household at its busiest. Compare expected download and upload speeds, service terms, router equipment and support, not just the largest advertised number.
